How long have you been working in Mr Clip?

I bought my Mr Clip round in August 1997.

What attracted you to Mr Clip over their competitors

I liked the way it was portrayed, the uniform of the utes and trailers, and the ability for me to build my business.

What do you enjoy most about working in your own business?

Working to your own limits.

Describe what you like best about the outdoor lifestyle

Having come from an indoor banking career it was great to change from a wet New Zealand indoors to a dry South Australian outdoors. Where else can you work a job like this 350 – 360 days a year, if you want.

Describe the best day / experience you’ve had so far

The day I signed the paper becoming a Mr Clip franchise owner, 19 years ago.

What do you most appreciate about the Mr Clip organisation?

I appreciate the assistance that Mr Clip gives when needed. The rapid response when trouble occurs, etc.

Mr Clip tries to focus on people ahead of profit. How has this attitude affected you whilst working in Mr Clip?

In my 40 years of employment, first in the Bank of New Zealand and now as a “Clippy” I have always put people ahead of profit, so this already suits my working attitude from the start.

If you had to describe Mr Clip and the team in one word, what would you say?

RESPONSIBLE

Do you have any other comments?

I wish I had the chance to do this type of work earlier in my life, but one has to accept the facts. I intend to work this business for as long as I can.

How long have you been working in Mr Clip?

I have been working with Mr Clip for almost 3 years.

What attracted you to Mr Clip over their competitors

I joined Mr Clip mainly because I was introduced to the team by a friend. The process of getting started as my own franchise was well explained and relatively easy, and I was given plenty of options about how to get started and what directions I wanted to take. This meant choosing Mr Clip was easy and starting my own business was relatively stress free as I was given plenty of support ti get my business off the ground.

What do you enjoy most about working in your own business?

Flexible hours and being able to choose when I take leave (or even just an extra day off) make working for myself very rewarding. I feel I can give a better balance between work and family life because I can choose my work hours enabling me to give my best to both work and family.

Describe what you like best about the outdoor lifestyle

Working outside allows me to stay active and fit, and I never get bored in the same way I would doing a desk job.

Describe the best day / experience you’ve had so far

The best days I have are usually the ones that are busy and full, and I reach the end of the day amazed at how much I have achieved.

What do you most appreciate about the Mr Clip organisation?

The Mr Clip organisation has been extremely helpful, particularly during the first twelve months of starting up my franchise. They even initially provided fill-in work. This willingness to support their franchisees as always been evident.

Mr Clip tries to focus on people ahead of profit. How has this attitude affected you whilst working in Mr Clip?

As a franchise this gives me a great deal of confidence about how I run my business. It gives me the confidence to take my business forward knowing I have the support of Mr Clip.

If you had to describe Mr Clip and the team in one word, what would you say?

Helpful.

How long have you been working in Mr Clip?

Eleven months.

What attracted you to Mr Clip over their competitors

I knew several franchisees and employees already working for Mr Clip and they testified to the fact that Mr Clip had always been extremely generous in their dealing with franchisees in giving them an excellent franchise agreement. The people at the top were approachable and operated with integrity and honesty at all times, as well as having a genuine interest in the welfare of all franchisees, as demonstrated by their willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty to ensure each franchise was running a successful business.

What do you enjoy most about working in your own business?

I enjoy the flexibility of working my own hours and the responsibilities that come with owning my own business are great in broadening my character and giving me a skillset I would not have gained anywhere else.

Describe what you like best about the outdoor lifestyle

I love the physical work, the calming peaceful atmosphere of the garden; the sunshine and wind is much better for my mental and physical health than being inside a stuffy office.

Describe the best day / experience you’ve had so far

Good days occur when clients are really satisfied with the job I have done. Recently I trimmed a large hedge for an elderly client; she was ecstatic about it as I did it at a much lower cost than the previous gardener who overcharged her. She took photos of it and sent a letter to me with the photos and a thank you note. When I know I’ve done a good job and the client is happy, that is a good day.

What do you most appreciate about the Mr Clip organisation?

I have always found that the people in the organisation have gone above and beyond their call of duty to ensure that I am running a successful business – both financially and personally. They are very approachable; I can always drop in for a coffee and chat; the relationship with them is one of mutuality – striving together rather than at odds with each other. The office staff also work extremely hard with the commercial contracts to ensure a minimum amount of fuss for the franchisees who take on that work. Workshops to increase our skills are another example of the way the organisation puts its franchisees above the company bottom dollar.

Mr Clip tries to focus on people ahead of profit. How has this attitude affected you whilst working in Mr Clip?

Focusing on people ahead of profit has helped me to ensure that the client is always getting a good service, that I am punctual and that their experience of Mr Clip is positive. If those things are there the money takes care of itself – a lesson I have had to learn.

If you had to describe Mr Clip and the team in one word, what would you say?

They operate with honesty and integrity, they are easy to approach, friendly, they are extremely supportive of their franchisees and are committed to the success of their franchisees.

David, could you trim that down to one word?

Integrity.
